Move from design concept to functional prototype
ExactMach coordinates suitable manufacturing partners for CNC prototypes and low-volume custom parts. A prototype can help an engineering team check fit, movement, assembly, thermal or structural behavior before committing to a larger production quantity.
The prototype process begins with the current drawing, CAD model and the questions the part must answer.
What a prototype RFQ should explain
Include:
- Current drawing revision and 3D model
- Material and any open material alternatives
- Prototype quantity and expected next-stage quantity
- Critical interfaces and functional dimensions
- Surface finish and cosmetic requirements
- Inspection evidence required
- Target delivery date and destination
If the design is still changing, mark the files as preliminary and identify which requirements are not final.
Prototype review priorities
A prototype review should focus on the features that determine whether the design works:
1. Mating interfaces and hole patterns 2. Fits, clearances and movement 3. Thin walls, pockets and difficult geometry 4. Material and finishing requirements 5. Measurement and acceptance criteria 6. Changes expected before repeat production
A prototype is not only a smaller production order. It is an opportunity to discover design, manufacturing and inspection issues before a larger commitment.
From prototype to repeat production
When a prototype is approved, record what was learned: drawing changes, tolerance adjustments, finish decisions, inspection points, packaging and supplier feedback. This information makes the next RFQ clearer and helps separate prototype requirements from repeat-production requirements.
The best production route may differ from the prototype route. Quantity, setup, tooling, fixtures, cycle time and inspection planning should be reviewed again before production release.
Materials and quality
Aluminium 5052, 6061 and 7075, 45 steel, SK2 steel and other materials can be evaluated subject to the specific drawing and manufacturing partner. Inspection reports, material certificates and other records are possible only when confirmed for the individual project.
ExactMach coordinates the review, quotation and supplier communication. It does not claim ownership of a factory, machine capacity or certification.
FAQ
Is CNC suitable for prototypes?
CNC machining can be suitable when the prototype must represent the intended material, fit, finish or mechanical behavior. The right process depends on geometry, quantity and the purpose of the prototype.
Can the prototype supplier support production?
This must be confirmed for each project. Prototype and repeat-production requirements should be reviewed separately.
