CNC Machined Enclosures: What to Include in Your RFQ

CUSTOM CNC PARTS / CNC MACHINING INSIGHTS

A machined enclosure is more than an outside profile. Its internal mounting features, connector openings, threaded bosses, lid interface and cosmetic surfaces all need to work together. A complete RFQ helps turn that collection of details into a reviewable manufacturing package.

Show the full enclosure system

Send the base, cover, gasket or sealing interface, mounting hardware, and a simple assembly reference when they affect fit. A single enclosure half may not reveal the need for a shared datum, an overlapping lip, a connector position, or a clearance condition. The assembly context helps the machining review focus on the interfaces that matter.

Identify functional surfaces

Mark the faces that seal, receive a cover, locate a connector, hold a board, or remain visible to the end user. These surfaces often need more explicit requirements than non-functional external walls. If a design uses an environmental enclosure rating, cite the applicable project requirement rather than assuming a generic outcome; NEMA publishes the official enclosure standard reference for its classifications.

Enclosure featureUseful RFQ information
Lid or cover interfaceShared datum, contact faces, fastener positions and any gasket or sealing requirement.
Internal mounting pointsBoard or component drawing, thread callouts, heights and clearance context.
Connector openingsConnector reference, orientation and positional relationship to the enclosure.
Cosmetic facesWhich surfaces are visible and how finish consistency should be evaluated.
Finish requirementsAnodizing, heat treatment or another process specified before machining starts.

Use section views for internal features

Deep pockets, standoffs, thin walls, cable passages and lid steps are easier to review in section. A 3D model gives the overall geometry, but a controlled 2D PDF drawing should record dimensions, material, finish and critical notes. See our guide to CAD files to send with a CNC RFQ.

Thread and fastener notes should be complete

Enclosures frequently mix tapped holes, through holes, countersinks and threaded inserts. Give each feature a complete callout and include a hardware reference when the mating fastener controls the required depth or lead-in. Our CNC thread specification guide covers the drawing details that prevent thread assumptions.

Plan material and finish together

State the required material grade and finishing requirement in the released RFQ package. ExactMach has experience machining 6061 and 7075 aluminum grades and can coordinate anodizing or heat-treatment support where the drawing requires it. If finish affects threads, sealing faces or cosmetic surfaces, identify those concerns before the order is released.

RFQ package: include the 3D models, drawing set, assembly reference, material, finish, quantity, inspection needs and destination. Use the complete CNC RFQ guide to organize the handoff.

Review the enclosure as an assembly

Before production, confirm that mounting, connectors, covers and hardware all reference the same revision. ExactMach coordinates drawing-defined CNC milling, CNC turning, prototypes and custom parts around Shenzhen and Dongguan for international orders, with inspection and finishing support discussed from the start.
