CNC Anodizing Masking Notes: What to Show on a Drawing

FINISH REQUIREMENTS / CNC MACHINING INSIGHTS

When anodizing support is part of a CNC order, a drawing may need to identify surfaces where coating is not wanted or where a contact interface must remain clear. The requirement should be visible in the released package, not left to a later email.

Identify the functional surface

Show the surface or area that matters and explain why: an electrical contact, a mating interface, a thread or another functional relationship. Avoid a vague “mask here” note without geometry or a controlled drawing reference.

Our anodizing and heat-treatment guide covers the finish details buyers should clarify in an RFQ.

Keep cosmetic and functional needs separate

A cosmetic exterior finish expectation is different from a surface that must remain suitable for a mating or contact function. Call out the relevant areas directly and provide any necessary assembly context.

See our assembly-fit guide for the mating information that helps clarify such interfaces.

Release one controlled package

Finish notes, material requirements and drawing revisions should stay aligned. If the masking requirement changes, revise the controlled drawing or named specification before production release.

Our revision control guide explains a practical approach.

RFQ check: identify the relevant surface, state the functional reason, include the requirement in the released drawing package, and confirm it matches the current revision.

ExactMach coordinates drawing-defined CNC milling, CNC turning, prototypes and custom parts around Shenzhen and Dongguan for international orders, with anodizing support where required.
