CNC Drawing Section Views: When a Part Needs More Than a 3D Model

DRAWING DETAILS / CNC MACHINING INSIGHTS

A 3D model communicates overall shape well, but it may not make an internal requirement easy to interpret. A section view can show the depth, floor, wall, entry side and mating relationship of a feature in one controlled drawing view.

Use a section view when function is hidden

Internal pockets, blind holes, stepped bores and enclosed channels often need more than a plan view. A section lets the RFQ review see the complete geometry and identify which faces or dimensions affect the function.

Feature What a section view can clarify
Blind hole Entry face, controlled depth and bottom condition.
Pocket Floor, wall relationship, depth and access opening.
Stepped bore Diameter changes, shoulders and seating relationship.
Boss or standoff Height reference, internal hole and mounted component interface.

Make the view a controlled requirement

The section should carry the released dimensions and notes, not merely illustrate the model. Include the same revision as the rest of the PDF package, and avoid relying on an unmarked screenshot or a separate email to communicate a critical internal feature.

Our drawing revision control guide explains why the model, PDF and RFQ reference should remain aligned before production release.

Show the functional reference

Where a section feature affects assembly, show the mounting face, locating surface or mating component that gives the dimension meaning. For example, a depth matters differently when it creates clearance than when it establishes a seating position.

See our assembly-fit guide for the specific mating context that helps a review team understand hidden interfaces.

Keep inspection notes tied to the view

If the floor, depth or shoulder is functionally important, identify that expectation in the same drawing package. A useful inspection note points to the controlled feature and its purpose instead of leaving the review team to infer what should be checked.

Our inspection requirements guide covers the information buyers can include before release.

RFQ check: add a section view when a critical feature is hidden, dimension the complete internal geometry, show its functional reference, and keep the model and PDF on the same released revision.

Make hidden features easy to review

ExactMach coordinates drawing-defined CNC milling, CNC turning, prototypes and custom parts around Shenzhen and Dongguan for international orders. A clear section view helps establish the released internal requirement before production begins.
